Mexican national sentenced to prison for illegal reentry

A Mexican national with a history of felony convictions has been sentenced for illegal reentry into the United States. U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei announced that 47-year-old Arnulfo Olivares-Cervantes pleaded guilty on April 23 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Drew B. Tipton to 46 months in federal prison.

Olivares-Cervantes, who is not a U.S. citizen, is expected to face removal proceedings after serving his sentence. During the hearing, it was revealed that he had previous felony convictions, including attempted murder and narcotics trafficking, as well as prior sentences for illegal reentry.

The individual was first removed from the country in 1999 but unlawfully returned three more times. Authorities discovered him again on June 15, 2023, in Edinburg.

The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Garcia prosecuted the case.

This case falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
