House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer has called on the D.C. Council to finalize legislative actions regarding the redevelopment of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus before its August 2025 recess. In his letter to D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, Comer stressed that Congress had passed the bipartisan Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act to facilitate swift redevelopment of the long-vacant stadium site.
Comer expressed concern over recent delays, particularly noting the removal of authorizing language from the D.C. budget as a potential disregard for congressional intent. He highlighted that "Congress has already spoken on this matter through the bipartisan H.R. 4984," which was signed into law by President Biden in January 2025.
The proposed redevelopment plan includes a $2.7 billion investment from the Washington Commanders, aiming to revitalize 174 acres of underutilized federal property, marking it as potentially "the largest private investment in D.C. history." Comer emphasized that while deliberation and financial analyses are necessary, all required votes should be completed before the Council's August recess.
Comer concluded by warning against further politically motivated delays, which could threaten this significant economic opportunity for Washington, D.C.
