U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has initiated efforts to prepare for the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization process. In Washington, D.C., Secretary Duffy convened a conference with Congressional members and infrastructure stakeholders to discuss priorities.
At the event, Secretary Duffy emphasized the urgency of building infrastructure rapidly and efficiently. "Our mission is to build as quickly and as much as possible," he stated. He highlighted the importance of moving funds swiftly to expedite project progress while streamlining regulations.
Secretary Duffy presented President Trump's America is Building Again agenda, which focuses on improving transportation safety, accelerating project delivery, increasing investment opportunities in transportation infrastructure, and strengthening partnerships with states and other stakeholders.
Following his remarks, Secretary Duffy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). This agreement aims to expedite infrastructure projects in Texas by allowing the state more control over environmental permitting processes. The partnership serves as a model for other states interested in adopting similar strategies.
Additionally, Secretary Duffy encouraged governors across the nation to take charge of NEPA responsibilities to enhance project management efficiency and reduce unnecessary costs and delays.
The Department of Transportation also announced a Request for Information titled “Advancing a Surface Transportation Proposal that Focuses on America’s Most Fundamental Infrastructure Needs” to gather feedback.
The current Surface Transportation Authorization will expire on September 30, 2026. The reauthorization will determine funding levels and policy directives for several federal agencies involved in transportation.
