Today, the Department of Homeland Security arrested Cristian Aybar Berroa, identified as a criminal illegal alien, in connection with an attempted armed robbery involving a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in New York City. The incident occurred on July 19 under the George Washington Bridge in Fort Washington Park. Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, another suspect involved and also a criminal illegal alien, was apprehended earlier.

According to a witness, the off-duty CBP officer was approached by two individuals on a scooter who drew a firearm. In response, the officer withdrew his own weapon for self-defense but was shot in his right arm and left cheek. The officer is currently stable at the hospital.

Berroa, originally from the Dominican Republic, entered the United States illegally on June 19, 2022. Despite having an active ICE detainer, New York City released him pending his immigration hearing. His criminal record includes arrests for reckless endangerment and grand larceny among other charges.

Similarly, Nunez also from the Dominican Republic entered the U.S. illegally on April 4, 2023. He has been charged with multiple offenses including felony grand larceny and assault.

“These violent thugs had committed a smorgasbord of crimes and been arrested multiple times and yet New York continued to release them," stated Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
