U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations (AMO) agents have intercepted a major drug smuggling operation, arresting two U.S. citizens and seizing over 580 pounds of cocaine en route from the Dominican Republic.
On July 20, 2025, an AMO asset detected a Surface Target of Interest approximately six miles west of Mona Island. The Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit was notified and deployed a Coastal Interceptor Vessel to intercept the target. Within 30 minutes, Marine Interdiction Agents visually identified the target and intercepted a sport fisher vessel about five nautical miles west of Cabo Rojo. The individuals on board admitted to traveling from Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic. A Puerto Rico Police Department marine unit provided support to escort the vessel back for inspection, where it was discovered that they were smuggling 236 cellophane-wrapped bricks of cocaine.
The interdiction is part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region and resulted in the seizure of illicit cargo and apprehension of those responsible. "AMO's swift and decisive action serves as a testament to the dedication and effectiveness of our law enforcement agencies in safeguarding our borders," said AMO leadership.
AMO leadership also highlighted the collaboration between multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Caribbean Air & Marine Operations Center, PRPD, and Dirección Nacional de Control de Drogas. "The successful interdiction of this smuggling attempt highlights the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation in safeguarding our borders," they added.
The cocaine, vessel, and subjects were transferred to HSI and DEA for further investigation and prosecution.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is described as America's frontline: "the nation's largest law enforcement organization" with over 65,000 personnel protecting America on land, air, and sea.
