The United States has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, which was declared in Kuala Lumpur. The statement from U.S. officials emphasized support for the immediate end to hostilities and called on both governments to uphold their commitments.
President Donald Trump and the Secretary of State issued a joint message: "President Trump and I are committed to an immediate cessation of violence and expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honor their commitments to end this conflict."
Acknowledgment was given to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his efforts in facilitating the talks. "We are grateful to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and for hosting the ceasefire talks," read the statement.
The United States also urged all involved parties to act on their agreements. "We urge all parties to follow through on their commitments. The United States will remain committed to and engaged in this U.S.-Malaysia-organized process to end this conflict," according to the statement.
The ceasefire comes after recent tensions between Cambodia and Thailand that drew concern from regional partners. The negotiations in Kuala Lumpur were seen as a critical step toward stability in Southeast Asia, with Malaysia playing a central role as mediator.
The U.S. Department of State reiterated its ongoing involvement in supporting diplomatic efforts in the region.
