Abdul Porter, a 28-year-old resident of Philadelphia, has been sentenced to four years in federal prison and three years of supervised release for illegal possession of a firearm. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg following Porter’s guilty plea earlier this year.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on May 2, 2023. Uniformed officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were patrolling the 39th District when they encountered a black Hyundai Sonata with South Carolina plates. A database search revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen in a carjacking just days before.
After spotting police, the Hyundai pulled over and Abdul Porter exited from the driver’s seat. Officers observed him crossing Cambria Street before he began to run; he was apprehended shortly after.
Police discovered a black Ruger 9mm semiautomatic pistol on the floor in front of the driver’s seat. DNA analysis linked Porter to the firearm. At the time of his arrest, Porter was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction.
“The case was investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas Zaleski,” according to United States Attorney David Metcalf.
The charges against Porter stemmed from an indictment filed in June 2024.
