U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Area Port of Houston/Galveston have reported ongoing seizures of firearms being smuggled southbound through the seaport. Many of these weapons are destined for countries such as Honduras, where they could contribute to violence and instability.

According to CBP, more than 400 handguns and long arms, nearly 1,000 magazines and gun parts, and almost 52,000 rounds of ammunition have been seized in the past two years through June 2025. Officers say smugglers often hide guns and components within shipments of legitimate goods in containers bound for overseas destinations.

CBP states that these enforcement actions are part of its mission to disrupt transnational criminal activity. The agency also shares intelligence with law enforcement partners that can help identify, arrest, and prosecute individuals involved in global criminal networks.

“CBP’s core function is to keep American safe by ensuring that weapons and terrorists do not enter the United States,” said CBP Area Port Director Thomas Mahn of Port Houston/Galveston. “We remain vigilant in our mission to prevent the illegal import or export of firearms and other contraband that can fuel violence and instability abroad and these seizures are a testament to the dedication and expertise of our officers who work tirelessly to protect our borders and communities."

CBP describes itself as America's largest law enforcement organization, responsible for border management on land, air, and sea. The agency says it works to facilitate lawful travel and trade while enhancing national security through innovation, intelligence sharing, collaboration, and trust.
