Kevin P. Davidson, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama
Calvin Craig Griffin, a 22-year-old resident of Montgomery, Alabama, has been sentenced to 81 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentencing was announced by Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson on July 31, 2025. After completing his prison term, Griffin will be subject to three years of supervised release. Federal law does not allow parole.
Court records show that on August 28, 2024, officers from the Montgomery Police Department were patrolling near Eastern Boulevard and Carmichael Road when they saw someone entering a hotel room with what looked like an AR-style pistol. Hotel management told officers they suspected illegal activity in the room and asked for help removing the individuals from the property.
When police entered the hotel room, they identified Calvin Griffin as the armed individual. Officers found an AR-style pistol with an extended magazine loaded with 63 rounds of ammunition inside the room. Due to previous felony convictions, Griffin is barred under federal law from having firearms or ammunition. He pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm on April 21, 2025.
The investigation was carried out by the Montgomery Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with support from the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit. This unit includes members from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, ATF, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and MPD. Assistant United States Attorney John J. Geer III prosecuted the case.
