The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that recent jobs data indicates a rise in employment among American-born workers, attributing the trend to stricter enforcement of immigration laws under President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on the July jobs report, saying, “The July jobs report shows that as illegal aliens continue to exit the labor force, more Americans are finding steady and gainful employment. President Trump and Secretary Noem’s leadership is making America both safe and prosperous again.”

McLaughlin also encouraged undocumented immigrants to use the CBP Home App for self-deportation, offering incentives such as $1,000, a free flight, travel assistance, and a potential opportunity for legal reentry. She added: “All illegal aliens are encouraged to leave the country by self-deporting using the CBP Home App to receive $1,000, a free flight, travel assistance, and the potential opportunity to come back the legal way. Don’t wait: leave today before it’s too late.”

Since January 2025, DHS reports collecting over $130 billion in tariffs—more than any of the previous five full fiscal years—with Customs and Border Protection achieving a 99.5% tariff collection rate. This figure is expected to rise after President Trump ended the "de minimis" trade loophole through an executive order.

For many years, the de minimis rule allowed low-value goods—including synthetic opioids—to enter U.S. markets with minimal oversight or duty payments. Officials say this contributed to drug-related deaths and economic losses for businesses and consumers. The closure of this loophole aims to restrict harmful imports.

“The Trump administration is putting the American people first, and the Department of Homeland Security is proud to enforce the laws ensuring peace and prosperity for the country,” McLaughlin said.
