Beaumont residents indicted on federal carjacking charges

A man and a woman from Beaumont, Texas, have been indicted on federal charges in connection with an alleged carjacking that took place in June 2025. Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced that Jason Lee Smith, 28, and Joanna Kyle Glover, 33, are facing charges after a federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment this week.

According to the indictment, on June 28, 2025, Smith allegedly used a firearm while he and Glover forcibly took a vehicle from another individual. Both Smith and Glover are charged with carjacking. In addition, Smith faces a separate charge for brandishing a firearm during the commission of the crime.

"This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN)."

If convicted on these charges, both defendants could receive up to 15 years in federal prison for carjacking. Smith could also face up to life in prison if found guilty on the firearms charge.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives along with the Beaumont Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Reynaldo P. Morin is prosecuting the case.

Authorities remind that an indictment does not constitute evidence of guilt; all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven otherwise in court.
