A U.S. Postal Service employee in Providence has pleaded guilty to participating in a mail theft operation at the U.S. Mail Processing and Distribution Center, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.
Darren Camacho, 33, of Providence, admitted guilt to charges of conspiracy to steal mail and theft of U.S. Mail by a postal employee. Sentencing is set for November 13, 2025. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Camacho acknowledged that from March 1, 2023, through June 26, 2023, he and others sorted through mail multiple times each week at the distribution center. They selected brightly colored envelopes, hid them in backpacks, and removed them from the facility. After work, they met at a designated location where they opened the stolen mail to collect cash, gift cards, and checks.
Information presented in court showed that Camacho distributed some of the stolen gift cards to another individual while using others himself for purchases at retail stores across Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Law enforcement recovered 55 stolen gift cards on June 28, 2023, from the home of one of Camacho’s relatives.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie M. White is prosecuting the case.
The investigation was conducted by the US Postal Service Office of Inspector General with help from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service as well as police departments in Providence and Smithfield.
