Bryan County man pleads guilty to illegal firearm possession

A Colbert, Oklahoma resident has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Sammy Lynn Key, 45, admitted guilt to one count of Felon in Possession of Firearm. The offense carries a potential penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Prosecutors stated that Key was found with a .38 Special caliber revolver on September 23, 2022. At the time, he had already been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Atoka County Sheriff’s Office.

U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Edward Snow accepted Key’s plea and ordered a presentence investigation report. Sentencing will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge after review of federal guidelines and other factors.

Key remains in custody with the United States Marshals Service while awaiting sentencing.
