Three Louisiana men indicted on federal fentanyl distribution charges

Three men from Louisiana have been indicted on federal charges related to fentanyl distribution, according to an announcement by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The indictment, unsealed on July 30, 2025, names Darryl Sumler, 61, of Slidell; Darryl Goodman, 47, of New Orleans; and Jason Slaughter, 33, of Bogalusa. The three were arrested by local law enforcement and Drug Enforcement Administration agents following the return of the indictment on June 26.

All three are charged in Count 1 with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute at least 40 grams of fentanyl. If convicted on this count, each faces a minimum sentence of five years and up to forty years in prison, fines up to $5 million, and at least four years of supervised release after imprisonment.

Sumler is additionally charged in Counts 2, 5, 6, and 7 for distributing at least forty grams of fentanyl. Conviction on any of these counts carries the same penalties as Count 1: a minimum five-year sentence that could extend up to forty years in prison.

Slaughter is named in Count 3 for possession with intent to distribute forty grams or more of fentanyl. Goodman is charged separately in Count 4 for distributing a quantity of fentanyl; if convicted he faces up to twenty years imprisonment and fines up to $1 million.

Each defendant also faces a mandatory special assessment fee for every count charged.

According to the indictment document, the alleged conspiracy took place over an unspecified period but continued until at least June 13, 2025. The activities are said to have occurred throughout the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The case forms part of Operation Take Back America—a Department of Justice initiative focused on combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations through coordinated efforts such as those led by Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
