Charleston man receives prison sentence for fentanyl distribution

Jaron Andrew O'Neal, 39, of Charleston, has been sentenced to six months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. The sentencing took place in Huntington, West Virginia.

Court documents show that investigators obtained a search warrant for a package addressed to a Barboursville address after a K9 unit alerted authorities to the package. Upon inspection, the package was found to contain about one kilogram of fentanyl. Investigators replaced the fentanyl with a sham substance and conducted a controlled delivery. On January 24, 2023, O'Neal retrieved the package from the address and left with it in his vehicle. Law enforcement then stopped O’Neal’s vehicle and found the package inside. O’Neal admitted to investigators that he believed the package contained controlled substances.

"Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston made the announcement and commended the investigative work of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service."

United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the sentence. Assistant United States Attorney Courtney L. Finney prosecuted the case.

"This case was prosecuted as part of Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (SOS), an enforcement surge that has sought to reduce the supply of deadly synthetic opioids in high impact areas."
