In Knoxville, Tennessee, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), working with both domestic and international partners, has announced criminal charges against five top leaders of Carteles Unidos. The Mexico-based group is considered one of the most dangerous cartels in the world. The charges include drug trafficking and weapons offenses.
Carteles Unidos was recently designated as a foreign terrorist organization. ICE officials say these charges are part of an ongoing effort to dismantle the cartel’s violent operations and disrupt its narcotics distribution network that reaches across the United States and internationally.
“This case is a direct result of the hard work and collaboration between HSI and our law enforcement partners,” said HSI Nashville acting Special Agent in Charge Dennis M. Fetting. “This extensive investigation highlights our unwavering commitment to protecting our country and communities from the dangers of illegal drug and weapons trafficking. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that these criminal organizations are disrupted and held accountable.”
