Moss Point man sentenced to over three years for Mobile bank robbery

A Moss Point, Mississippi resident has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for robbing a Family Security Credit Union branch in Mobile, Alabama. According to court documents, Joseph Deric Nelson, 67, entered the credit union on March 19, 2025, while disguised and handed a teller a note claiming he had a gun and explosives. The teller complied with his demand for money.

As Nelson left the scene with the cash, a witness from the bank followed him first on foot and then by vehicle. The witness was able to alert officers from the Mobile Police Department who apprehended Nelson shortly after the incident.

Following his prison term, Nelson will serve three years of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Sean Costello of the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentence. The case was investigated by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Mobile Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tandice Blackwood prosecuted the case.
