Jacksonville man indicted for federal firearms violation in Eastern District of Texas

A Jacksonville man has been charged with a federal firearms violation in the Eastern District of Texas, according to an announcement by Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.

Cody Nerren, 34, was indicted by a federal grand jury this week on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Authorities allege that Nerren was found with a firearm on April 24, 2025, in Cherokee County. Investigators determined that Nerren had prior felony convictions, which legally prohibit him from owning or possessing firearms.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative led by the Department of Justice that aims to combat illegal immigration and dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations while addressing violent crime. The operation brings together resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.

If convicted, Nerren could face up to 15 years in federal prison.

The investigation is being conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble is prosecuting the case.

“A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” stated the press release.
