Beaver Street Fisheries, LLC, based in Jacksonville, Florida, has issued a voluntary recall of select packages of Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp EZ-Peel & Deveined Tail-On 21-25 Per lb. The recall follows an advisory from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding potential contamination with Cesium-137 (Cs-137), a man-made radioactive element.
The recalled shrimp was distributed to Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia. The product was available for purchase between July 28 and August 7, 2025.
No illnesses have been reported as a result of consuming this product.
According to the FDA statement released on August 19: “At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. commerce. FDA is working with distributors and retailers that received product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by Customs & Border Protection (CBP), but from shipments that did not alert for Cs-137, to recommend that firms conduct a recall. In conjunction with other information, FDA determined that product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati violates the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act in that it appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern.”
Cesium-137 can be present in the environment at low levels but poses an increased risk if consumed over long periods through contaminated food or water due to its potential to cause cancer.
Consumers are advised not to eat the recalled shrimp and instead dispose of it or return it to Walmart for a full refund.
