House select committee on China asks local leaders to end partnerships with CCP front groups

The House Select Committee on China has urged local leaders to terminate partnerships with groups linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) involved in cultural and educational exchanges. This request was made public through a press release.

According to the committee's statement, Chairman John Moolenaar sent letters to Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen. These letters expressed concerns regarding recent student trips to China, which were organized by groups identified as CCP affiliates. The committee indicated that these trips were not neutral exchanges but part of broader efforts described as United Front work by U.S. intelligence agencies.

The House Select Committee on the CCP also published an investigation summary requesting Ford Motor Company to provide licensing agreements and operational details concerning its partnership with Chinese battery manufacturer CATL. The committee noted that Ford had not provided essential documentation related to this agreement as of September 2023. Congressional action, including the use of compulsory processes, was still under consideration.

According to Reuters, Ford Executive Chair Bill Ford said that the company's planned electric vehicle battery facility in Marshall, Michigan could be jeopardized if federal tax credits for facilities using Chinese technology were revoked. The plant employs licensed technology from CATL, a company based in China. Reuters further reported that legislation enacted in July 2025 maintained key tax credits for U.S.-based manufacturers while restricting eligibility for entities connected with specific Chinese suppliers.

The Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party is dedicated to bipartisan efforts aimed at building consensus on the threat posed by the CCP. The committee says its mission is to formulate a plan of action to protect American citizens, the economy, and national values. It conducts investigations, issues reports, and makes policy recommendations aligned with this mission, according to its official website.
