Montell Efrem Ward, a 51-year-old resident of Gary, Indiana, has been sentenced to 77 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to two counts of robbery. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon.
Court documents show that in January 2023, Ward committed robberies at two hotels in Merrillville, Indiana. During the first incident, he threatened a hotel clerk with a knife and restrained the victim using computer cords before completing the robbery. The following day, Ward used a knife to rob another hotel clerk. The total amount taken from both incidents was $300.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation into these crimes. Assistant United States Attorney Joel L. Mathur prosecuted the case.
