Tahlequah woman sentenced to prison for illegal firearm possession

Laura Gema Carroll, a 36-year-old resident of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. The sentencing was announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

Carroll pleaded guilty on March 19, 2025, after authorities determined that she possessed a semi-automatic pistol and five rounds of ammunition on June 12, 2024. Investigators noted that she had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Tahlequah Police Department.

This prosecution falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community organizations. The Department of Justice launched an updated strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021. The strategy focuses on building trust within communities, supporting violence prevention programs, prioritizing strategic enforcement efforts, and evaluating outcomes.
