Cherokee County man sentenced to prison for illegal firearm possession

Kenny Ray Jackson, a 65-year-old resident of Park Hill, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for illegally possessing firearms and ammunition. The sentencing was announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

The case resulted from an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. According to authorities, Jackson pleaded guilty on February 11, 2025, after being found in possession of a semi-automatic rifle, a lever action rifle, a break open shotgun, and 54 rounds of assorted caliber ammunition on July 29, 2024. Jackson had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.

“This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White presided over the sentencing hearing. Jackson has been ordered to self-report on September 19, 2025, at a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to begin serving his sentence without parole.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan E. Soverly prosecuted the case.
