U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Del Rio Port of Entry seized more than $738,000 worth of methamphetamine in a single incident, according to an announcement from the agency.

The seizure took place on August 25 at the Del Rio International Bridge. Officers referred a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by a 30-year-old male Mexican citizen who is also a U.S. resident alien, for further inspection. During secondary screening that included the use of CBP canines and nonintrusive inspection technology, officers discovered eight packages containing approximately 81.70 pounds of suspected methamphetamine concealed within stone benches inside the vehicle. The estimated street value of the drugs is $730,378.

“Our frontline CBP officers remain ever vigilant as they conduct their daily inspectional duties,” said Port Director Liliana Flores, Del Rio Port of Entry. “This significant meth seizure exemplifies our ongoing commitment to our border security mission and to keep our border communities safe.”

CBP seized the narcotics following their discovery. Deputies from the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office arrested the driver and began a criminal investigation into the case.

CBP describes itself as America’s largest law enforcement organization and states that its workforce of over 65,000 people is responsible for protecting the country on land, air, and sea while enforcing travel and trade laws.
