Leah B. Foley United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts | Department of Justice

A Salvadoran national living in Chelsea, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty in federal court to unlawfully reentering the United States after having been deported. Juan Carlos Gil-Ochoa, 36, entered his plea before U.S. District Court Judge Angel Kelley. Sentencing is scheduled for October 3, 2025.

Gil-Ochoa was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2025 and arrested by immigration authorities on May 12, 2025. He had previously been deported to El Salvador in April 2013. Authorities encountered him again in October 2023 after he returned to the United States without permission.

The charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. After serving any sentence imposed by the court, Gil-Ochoa will be subject to deportation once more. Sentences are determined according to the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
