St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery was indicted on a civil rights charge in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, according to federal authorities. Montgomery, 28, appeared in court Thursday morning and pleaded not guilty.
The indictment alleges that on February 14, 2025, Montgomery deprived the acting commissioner of the St. Louis City Justice Center of her right to be free from unlawful detention by a person acting under color of law. It states that he directed and participated in the restraint and detention of her.
If convicted, Montgomery faces up to one year in prison, a fine of up to $1,000 or both.
"A charge set forth in an indictment is merely an accusation and does not constitute proof of guilt. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty."
The FBI and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Krug is prosecuting.
