El Paso Border Patrol warns public about misinformation from smuggling groups

The U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector has issued a warning to the public regarding an increase in false information being spread by smuggling organizations on social media platforms. According to officials, these criminal groups are targeting vulnerable individuals with misleading claims about changes to asylum procedures and immigration rules, encouraging them to undertake illegal and hazardous journeys.

“These criminal networks are putting lives at risk by spreading lies to exploit people for profit,” said El Paso Sector Interim Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar. “They use social media to create false hope, but the reality is these journeys often end in tragedy.”

Authorities emphasize that there have been no recent changes in immigration laws. Anyone attempting unauthorized entry into the United States through the El Paso Sector or any area between ports of entry will be subject to arrest, prosecution, and removal.

The agency advises against trusting rumors or messages from smugglers online. Officials reiterate that the only legal way to seek entry into the country is through official immigration channels.

Do not trust smugglers. Do not believe the lies on social media. Stay informed and stay safe.

Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activity related to smuggling while remaining anonymous by calling 1-800-635-2509.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection describes itself as America’s largest law enforcement organization, responsible for protecting national borders on land, air, and sea, as well as enforcing lawful travel and trade.
