DermaRite Industries, LLC has expanded its voluntary nationwide recall of several over-the-counter skin care products due to potential contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex. The company first announced a recall on July 16 and has now included additional products and lots in the effort. The list of affected items is available on DermaRite’s website.
According to the company, “Burkholderia cepacia complex in these products may result in serious and lifethreatening infections if the products are used by immunosuppressed individuals or by people attending to immunosuppressed individuals. For healthy individuals with minor skin lesions, the use of the product may result in local infections, whereas in immunocompromised individuals the infection could spread into the blood stream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis.”
The recalled products include a range of creams, lotions, soaps, hand sanitizers, and skin protectants such as 4-N-1 no rinse wash cream, DermaCerin moisturizing cream, DermaFungal antifungal cream, DermaKleen antiseptic lotion soap with Vitamin E, DermaMed skin protectant for poison ivy or other irritations, DermaSarra external analgesic for itching relief, Gel Rite instant gel hand sanitizer with vitamin E, Hand E Foam foaming hand sanitizer with vitamin E, KleenFoam antimicrobial foam soap with Aloe Vera, Lantiseptic skin protectant for minor cuts and burns, PeriGiene antiseptic cleanser for perineal use, PeriGuard skin protectant for rashes from wetness or irritation, Renew Dimethicone and Renew Periprotect both indicated for diaper rash treatment and prevention as well as sealing out wetness; Renew Skin Repair OTC cream; and UltraSure anti-perspirant & deodorant.
These products were distributed across the United States and Puerto Rico.
DermaRite stated that it has informed distributors and customers via email to examine their inventories immediately and destroy any affected items according to each facility’s protocols.
