Manderson resident acquitted of involuntary manslaughter after federal trial

A federal jury in Rapid City, South Dakota, found Matocika Poor Bear of Manderson not guilty of involuntary manslaughter on August 28, 2025. Poor Bear, age 20, had been indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2025. The indictment alleged that he assaulted a man during an unknown dispute at a residence in Manderson on November 16, 2024. The man was injured and later died.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the FBI investigated the case. The U.S. Attorney's Office handled the prosecution.

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced the acquittal.
