The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced new reimbursement opportunities for state and local law enforcement agencies that work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest and remove individuals identified as serious criminal offenders, including murderers, gang members, rapists, terrorists, and pedophiles.
According to DHS, these efforts have expanded under Secretary Noem’s leadership. The number of 287(g) agreements—partnerships between ICE and local law enforcement—has increased by 609%, rising from 135 to 958 agreements.
The 287(g) Program Task Force Model allows participating agencies to receive tools, training, and resources necessary to enforce immigration laws while performing regular police duties. Currently, officers from 40 states are involved in the program. There are 8,501 trained task force officers and more than 2,000 additional officers in training.
Beginning October 1, 2025, law enforcement agencies participating in the program will be eligible for full reimbursement of annual salary and benefits for each eligible trained officer assigned to the program. Overtime coverage will also be reimbursed up to 25% of an officer’s annual salary. Agencies can also qualify for quarterly monetary performance awards based on their success rates in locating illegal aliens as provided by ICE and their overall assistance with ICE's mission:
- Agencies achieving a success rate between 90% -100% will receive $1,000 per eligible task force officer.
- Those with rates between 80% -89% will get $750 per officer.
- Rates between 70%-79% will result in $500 per officer.
"ICE is not only supercharging our hiring, we are also multiplying partnerships with state and local law enforcement to remove the worst of the worst including murderers, gang members, rapists, terrorists, and pedophiles from our country. Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill, ICE launched a new reimbursement program for state and local law enforcement who partner with DHS to make America safe again,” said ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan. “We encourage all state and local law enforcement agencies to sign a 287(g) agreement now. By joining forces with ICE, you’re not just gaining access to these unprecedented reimbursement opportunities—you’re becoming part of a national effort to ensure the safety of every American family.”
