Uber Technologies Inc. has announced its leadership in publishing data and making long-term safety investments, addressing reports that question its commitment to passenger safety.

According to Uber, it was the first company in the rideshare industry to issue a dedicated Safety Report in 2019, covering incidents from 2017–2018. This report laid the foundation for public transparency around safety incidents by including data on the five most serious sexual assault categories. Uber categorized these with expert input to ensure consistency and credibility. The company continues this commitment to transparency and remains one of the few companies regularly soliciting and publishing such data for public scrutiny. As part of ongoing litigation, Uber provided details on the total number of trips with safety reports, emphasizing that most reports were less serious or unaudited.

Uber reports a 44% drop in serious sexual assault incidents among U.S. trips from 2017–2022. This decline demonstrates meaningful impact from enhanced policies and safety measures. While this reduction indicates progress, Uber underscores that any degree of sexual assault is unacceptable and continues to invest in prevention. According to court filings and Uber’s response, serious assaults have fallen by this margin.

Safety is an organizational priority at Uber, reflected in billions of dollars invested, thousands of safety personnel employed, and continuous upgrades to systems, policies, and technology. This commitment underscores Uber’s belief that transparency coupled with action is the most effective path to preventing harm. The internal mandate drives both proactive development of features like S‑RAD (Safety-Related Advanced Driver) and external accountability through regular reporting.

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in San Francisco, Uber operates as a global mobility and delivery platform across over 70 countries. The company offers services including ride-hailing, food and package delivery, freight logistics, as well as electric bike and scooter rentals.
