The U.S. Department of State has announced a new visa restriction policy aimed at countering what it describes as China’s corrupt influence in Central America. The policy allows the United States to restrict visas for Central American nationals who, while in their countries and acting on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), knowingly engage in activities that undermine the rule of law.

According to the Department, individuals found to be directing, authorizing, funding, providing significant support to, or carrying out such activities will face restrictions along with their immediate family members. These individuals will generally be ineligible for entry into the United States.

“These actions reaffirm President Trump’s commitment to protect America’s economic prosperity and national security interests in our region. We continue to promote accountability for Central American nationals who intentionally work with the CCP in Central America and destabilize our hemisphere,” the statement read.

The Department also noted that it is already taking steps under this new policy against certain Central American nationals believed to have previously engaged in these activities.

“We continue to use all available tools to promote safety and security of our region,” according to the announcement.

The visa restrictions are being imposed pursuant to Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
