A federal grand jury has indicted Aujawan Hymon, 20, of Savannah, Georgia, on charges of illegal possession of a machinegun. The indictment follows an investigation into a shooting that took place at Oglethorpe Mall on July 2, 2025.
According to authorities, Hymon was among six suspects involved in the incident. Investigators found that he had a firearm equipped with an extended magazine and a machinegun conversion device during the shooting. Law enforcement officers recovered the machinegun as part of their investigation.
Officials confirmed that Hymon does not have any prior felony convictions.
United States Attorney Margaret E. Heap stated, “We are working with our law enforcement partners to stop the illegal possession of machineguns. Let me be clear- if you possess a glock switch, or any device that converts a firearm into a machinegun, we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”
ATF Acting ASAC Robert Davis added, "Machinegun conversion devices are fueling a deadly uptick in gun violence, turning routine firearms into weapons of war. This case is yet another example of why ATF is committed to aggressively identifying and removing these illegal devices from our communities."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Savannah Police Department are conducting the investigation. Special Assistant United States Attorney Makeia R. Jonese and Deputy Criminal Chief Greg Gilluly are prosecuting the case for the United States.
Authorities remind the public that all indicted defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
