U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited several educational institutions in Michigan as part of her Returning Education to the States Tour. The visit included stops at Pembroke Academy, a public K-8 charter school, where she participated in a roundtable discussion on school choice with House Committee on Education and Workforce Chairman Tim Walberg, Congressman John Moolenaar, Congressman Burgess Owens, and local community leaders.
Secretary McMahon also visited Renaissance High School, a magnet high school, and Washington Parks Academy, another public K-8 charter school. In addition to touring these schools, she spent time at Hillsdale Academy—a private classical school—where she discussed literacy initiatives with faculty members. Her itinerary concluded with a visit to Hillsdale College for meetings with college leadership and delivering remarks focused on restoring public trust in higher education.
“In Michigan, I had the opportunity to visit both a variety of K-12 schools and Hillsdale College, each showing in their own way how local leadership and independence can drive meaningful outcomes,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “These visits reinforced the value of letting schools lead with solutions that reflect the needs and strengths of their communities.”
Chairman Tim Walberg joined Secretary McMahon during parts of the tour. He stated: “I was glad to join Secretary McMahon today on her Returning Education to the States Tour as she examines what’s working in Michigan and across the country. As we visited schools like Pembroke Academy, Hillsdale Academy, and Hillsdale College, the Secretary and I were able to see the incredible benefits of state and local-led education firsthand. I am glad to have an ally in the Department of Education like Secretary McMahon who understands the importance of returning education to the states while putting students, teachers, and families first. Together, we can do right by our students and make education great again!”
