Georgia woman receives prison sentence for wire fraud exceeding $1 million

Chisom Okonkwo, a 29-year-old resident of Lawrenceville, Georgia, has been sentenced to seven months in prison for her role in a wire fraud scheme involving more than $1 million. The sentencing took place in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

Court documents and statements presented during the proceedings revealed that Okonkwo and another individual created an email address designed to mimic that of an employee at a business located in Gilmer County. This deception led a vendor to transfer over $1 million into a bank account controlled by the defendants. Of the stolen funds, more than $600,000 was spent before authorities uncovered the scheme.

Okonkwo has been ordered to pay restitution totaling $610,146.03.

A second defendant in the case, Prince Boateng Adjei, age 31 and also from Lawrenceville, Georgia, is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.

"Assistant U.S. Attorney Jarod Douglas prosecuted the case on behalf of the government."

"The United States Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General investigated the case."

"Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh presided."
