U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Los Indios International Bridge in Brownsville, Texas, apprehended a 78-year-old man wanted on an outstanding felony warrant for sexual assault of a child. The incident occurred on September 9, when officers referred Miguel Rolando Echeverria, a lawful permanent U.S. resident, for secondary inspection after an initial screening.
During the secondary examination, CBP officers used biometric verification and federal law enforcement databases to confirm Echeverria’s identity. They discovered he was the subject of an outstanding felony arrest warrant for sexual assault of a minor issued by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office in Woodstock, Illinois. Officers then turned Echeverria over to the Los Indios Police Department for transportation to Cameron County jail pending adjudication of the warrant.
Port Director Tater Ortiz stated, “This apprehension shows our dedication to protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities, our children. We work diligently to ensure that individuals accused of committing crimes against children are held accountable.”
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is a centralized automated database that allows law enforcement agencies to share information about outstanding warrants for various offenses. CBP has previously made arrests based on NCIC data involving charges such as homicide, escape, money laundering, robbery, narcotics distribution, sexual child abuse, fraud, larceny, and military desertion.
Criminal charges referenced in this case are allegations; defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
CBP is recognized as America’s largest law enforcement organization and manages unified border operations across land, air, and sea domains with more than 65,000 personnel nationwide.
