The United States has announced new sanctions against two Sudanese Islamist actors, Gebreil Ibrahim Mohamed Fediel (Gebreil) and the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade (BBMB), in an effort to address ongoing instability in Sudan. The U.S. Department of the Treasury issued these measures under Executive Order 14098, which targets individuals and groups seen as destabilizing Sudan and hindering its transition toward democracy.
According to the U.S. government, these sanctions are intended to limit Islamist influence in Sudan and counter Iran’s involvement in the region. Officials noted that Sudanese Islamist elements have played a significant role in obstructing democratic progress, particularly since the fall of former President Omar al-Bashir’s regime in 2019. They also cited recent actions by hardline Islamists who have undermined peace efforts and established connections with Iranian entities, including receiving technical support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
“These sanctions hold malign actors accountable for sowing instability and destruction in Sudan with the help of Iran. The United States is committed to working with regional partners to achieve peace and stability in Sudan and ensuring the country does not become a permissive environment for those who threaten Americans and national interests of the United States. The U.S. government will use its tools to ensure that Sudanese Islamists never regain power in Sudan,” according to a statement released by officials.
The Department of the Treasury acted under E.O. 14098, which allows for sanctions on individuals or entities responsible for actions that threaten peace or security in Sudan or those serving as leaders or officials within such organizations during relevant periods.
