Alvin Alexis Cruz Garcia, 27, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced in Superior Court to 20 years in prison for the beating death of Ramon Gomez Yanez at Ogden Market. The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Cruz Garcia was convicted of one count of second-degree murder while armed after a four-day trial on June 6, 2025. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman imposed the sentence, which includes five years of supervised release following imprisonment.
Evidence presented by the government indicated that on March 23, 2021, Ramon Gomez Yanez, age 38, parked his car and stopped at Ogden Market on Ogden Street NW. Upon returning to his vehicle, he encountered Cruz Garcia urinating near his car. Surveillance footage from the market showed an exchange between the two men before Cruz Garcia punched Gomez Yanez to the ground. While Gomez Yanez was down, Cruz Garcia kicked and punched him several times in the head before leaving the scene. Gomez Yanez died as a result of his injuries.
Cruz Garcia was arrested on June 7, 2022 and has remained in custody since then.
Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department joined U.S. Attorney Pirro in announcing the sentence.
In their statement regarding the sentencing, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Chief Smith commended those involved in investigating the case from the Metropolitan Police Department and acknowledged Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jin Park and Katrenia Shelly for prosecuting it.
