Two Utah men indicted after seizure of approximately 100,000 fentanyl pills

Two Utah residents have been indicted on federal drug charges after law enforcement officers seized about 100,000 fentanyl pills during a search in West Valley City. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah announced that Elvin Isaac Vega Zuniga, 19, an undocumented Honduran national, and Andrew Estefan Valle Acosta, 19, both from West Valley City, were charged following the seizure.

The indictment follows an investigation by the FBI and the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force that began in May 2025. Agents identified a residence allegedly used for distributing fentanyl after conducting a controlled purchase. On September 2, 2025, they executed a search warrant at the property and recovered the pills, which tested positive for fentanyl.

Authorities stated that Vega Zuniga was previously found to be in the United States illegally by ICE in 2023 and had received a notice to appear regarding his immigration status. Despite this, he is accused of participating in fentanyl trafficking.

Both men are charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute. Their initial court appearance is scheduled for September 19, 2025, before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City.

“Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah made the announcement.”

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman and investigated by the FBI along with local law enforcement.

“This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).”

Officials remind that an indictment is only an allegation; defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
