The United States has extended its congratulations to Papua New Guinea as the Pacific nation marks its 50th year of independence on September 16. The message, delivered on behalf of the American people and government, highlights five decades of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“The United States and Papua New Guinea continue to enjoy a meaningful relationship as we celebrate your 50th anniversary of independence and 50 years of bilateral ties. The United States and Papua New Guinea reaffirmed our commitments to our bilateral relationship during Prime Minister Marape’s recent visit to Washington, DC, during which he met with Vice President Vance and Deputy Secretary Landau. In the coming year, we look forward to advancing our mutual priorities including maritime security cooperation, regional defense cooperation, and economic prosperity,” the statement reads.

The message also notes recent high-level meetings in Washington D.C., where leaders from both nations discussed ways to strengthen their partnership. “I look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership. Please accept my warmest congratulations on another year of independence as you commemorate this important day.”

Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australia in 1975 and has since developed close diplomatic ties with several countries, including the United States.
