The State Department has updated its policy regarding the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) for unmanned aerial systems (UAS), a move welcomed by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). The change is expected to simplify the export process for UAS technology produced in the United States.

Eric Fanning, President and CEO of AIA, commented on the decision. “This much-needed change to the Missile Technology Control Regime export policy recognizes the evolving nature of the threat environment and will make U.S. companies more competitive in an ever-growing UAS market,” Fanning said. “This new, common-sense approach to MTCR will allow U.S. companies to out innovate our competitors, streamline the arms transfer process, and provide predictability for American manufacturers.”

The modification is intended to enhance competitiveness for American firms within the expanding global market for unmanned aerial systems.
