An 18-year-old man from Westminster, Colorado, has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Humzah Mashkoor was taken into custody at Denver International Airport on December 18 before he could board a flight that would begin an overseas trip.

Court documents state that Mashkoor planned to travel first to the United Arab Emirates and then continue on to either Afghanistan or Syria. According to the affidavit supporting the criminal complaint, his intent was to serve as a fighter for ISIS.

The FBI’s Denver Field Office is leading the investigation into this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Cramer-Babycz for the District of Colorado is prosecuting, along with Jennifer Levy of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

“A complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
