Commerce announces $4.2 billion rail deal with Kazakhstan supporting over 11,000 U.S. jobs

The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced a major commercial agreement between Wabtec Corporation and the Government of Kazakhstan. The deal, valued at $4.2 billion, will see Wabtec provide 300 locomotives to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), marking it as the largest rail equipment contract in history.

The signing ceremony took place during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York City, attended by Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade William Kimmitt, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, and Rafael Santana, President and CEO of Wabtec Corporation.

“Today’s record Locomotive Deal commercial agreement for the great American company Wabtec Corporation shows the economic prosperity that President Trump’s America First Trade Policy continues to deliver,” said Secretary Lutnick. “This landmark deal advances U.S. manufacturing jobs and accelerates growth, opportunity, and connectivity in America and Central Asia.”

Under Secretary Kimmitt added: “This massive commercial deal reinforces U.S. industrial strength and supports our economic prosperity with high-quality U.S. jobs. American innovation, technology, and manufacturing remain the gold standard. We will continue to support manufacturing jobs across our nation and deliver on President Trump’s trade agenda that puts the American worker first.”

Wabtec Corporation is headquartered in Pennsylvania and will supply 300 evolution Series ES44Aci heavy-haul locomotive kits over ten years under this contract. The agreement is expected to support more than 11,000 American jobs.

The Department of Commerce highlighted its continued efforts to strengthen U.S. industry against foreign competition through initiatives led by its ITA Advocacy Center and U.S. Commercial Service experts both domestically and abroad.
