Kevin Delgado, a 40-year-old resident of Bayside, New York, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for making threats against Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr., who was joined by Reuben C. Coleman, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Court records show that on October 21, 2023, Attorney General Nessel posted a photo on her X account along with comments about her murdered friend’s faith and community contributions. The following day, Delgado responded to Nessel's post with a threatening message.
Delgado pleaded guilty in May 2025 to one count of transmitting threats in interstate commerce. He also admitted that he targeted Nessel because of her actual or perceived sexual orientation and religion.
“We must protect Americans so that they can speak without the fear of violence. And public figures do not give up these protections when they choose to serve us,” U.S. Attorney Gorgon said.
Reuben Coleman stated: “The sentencing of Kevin Delgado sends a strong message that public officials elected to serve the people cannot be hindered by threats and must be able to do their jobs free from intimidation. I want to thank the members of the FBI Detroit Public Corruption and Civil Rights Squad and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan for their dedication and successful work in bringing this case to closure. I’d also like to thank the FBI New York Field Office for their assistance with this investigation. The FBI in Michigan will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to identify, and hold accountable, those who issue dangerous threats against officials dedicated to protecting and serving our communities.”
The investigation was led by the FBI, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Frances Lee Carlson prosecuted the case.
