U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Laredo Port of Entry seized more than $3.7 million worth of hard narcotics in four separate incidents over the weekend, according to an official statement.
Port Director Alberto Flores commented on the seizures, stating, "The recent seizures at the Laredo Port of Entry demonstrate the unwavering commitment of our officers to safeguard our nation from the threat of illicit narcotics. Through their vigilance, expertise, and dedication, we successfully intercepted over $3.7 million worth of hard narcotics in just four separate incidents. These seizures highlight the critical role our port plays in protecting our communities and ensuring the integrity of our borders."
The first incident took place on September 19 at the World Trade Bridge when a 39-year-old male Mexican citizen driving a 2011 Freightliner tractor was referred for secondary inspection. Officers found 32 packages containing nearly 75 pounds of fentanyl hidden inside the vehicle, with an estimated street value of approximately $1.75 million.
Later that day at the same bridge, another driver—a 46-year-old male Mexican citizen operating a similar tractor—was also referred for further inspection. Officers discovered 20 packages containing about 45 pounds of fentanyl and four packages with just over one pound of cocaine. The combined street value was reported as roughly $1.07 million.
A third seizure occurred later that day involving a 48-year-old male Mexican citizen driving a 2005 Kenworth tractor. CBP officers found 16 packages containing more than 37 pounds of cocaine and one package with a small amount of fentanyl, totaling about $498,000 in street value.
On September 21 at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, officers inspected a 31-year-old male U.S. citizen driving a Dodge Ram truck. They found eight packages with almost 15 pounds of heroin and another 24 packages containing over four pounds of methamphetamine among his personal belongings. The total estimated value was about $405,000.
In all four cases combined, CBP seized three commercial tractors and one passenger vehicle along with the drugs. All drivers were arrested and Homeland Security Investigations is conducting further investigation into each case.
CBP describes itself as America's largest law enforcement organization and says its mission includes enforcing safe travel and trade while enhancing national security through various means including intelligence and collaboration.
