Jefferson County man convicted on drug and gun charges

A federal jury has found Jaylin Artez Patton, 29, of Birmingham, Alabama, guilty on multiple drug and firearm charges. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

The verdict followed three days of testimony in front of U.S. District Court Judge Annemarie C. Axon. Patton was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a machinegun, possession of fentanyl, and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

Evidence presented at the trial showed that officers from the Birmingham Police Department, with assistance from agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), attempted to stop Patton to execute an arrest warrant. Patton fled the scene in his vehicle, which he eventually drove off the interstate into a ditch and through a fence before fleeing on foot. Officers apprehended him after a short pursuit and recovered fentanyl as well as a Glock pistol modified with a machinegun conversion device known as a “Glock switch.”

The case was investigated by the ATF and the Birmingham Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys William R. McComb and Darius Greene are prosecuting the case.
