President Donald J. Trump has signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM) that sets out a new approach to counter domestic terrorism and organized political violence in the United States.
The memorandum outlines a comprehensive strategy aimed at investigating, disrupting, and dismantling all stages of organized political violence and domestic terrorism. The administration states that the recent increase in political violence is not isolated, but part of coordinated campaigns that use targeted intimidation and violence.
According to the White House, these developments require a new law enforcement strategy to address and prevent such acts. The statement from the President’s office notes: "Political violence has hurt too many innocent people and taken too many lives, undermining our American values of free speech, citizenship, the rule of law, patriotic and familial devotion, and love of God."
The NSPM is intended to uphold these values by focusing on prevention as well as response.
