Federal authorities in the Northern District of Ohio have announced several recent immigration enforcement actions. The United States Attorney’s Office reported that three individuals were sentenced to time served for illegal reentry into the United States after previous removals.
U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey J. Helmick issued the sentences after each defendant pleaded guilty to violating Title 8 U.S. Code 1326, which prohibits reentering the country without government consent following removal. All three remain detained and are awaiting deportation.
The individuals sentenced include Gonzalo Diaz-Resendiz, 29, a Mexican citizen previously removed at least once, most recently on September 6, 2013; Edin Oneil Carrillos-Rodriguez, 36, a Honduran citizen previously removed at least twice, most recently on December 11, 2014; and Raul Samano-Fuerte, 49, a Mexican citizen who had been removed at least four times with the latest removal on March 10, 2009. They were found in Putnam County (Ottawa), Sandusky County (Clyde), and Huron County (Norwalk), respectively.
A federal grand jury also indicted Jaime Sanchez-Tlehuactle, 43, a Mexican citizen charged with illegal reentry after being found in Wood County (Bowling Green). He was last removed from the United States on April 21, 2021.
Investigations were conducted by U.S. Border Patrol-Sandusky Bay Station. Assistant United States Attorneys Gene Crawford, Matthew Simko, and Ava Rotell Dustin are prosecuting these cases for the Northern District of Ohio.
According to the announcement: "An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law."
These actions fall under Operation Take Back America—a nationwide Department of Justice initiative focused on addressing illegal immigration and related criminal activity by using all available resources to combat cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
