U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has unveiled a new display at Dulles International Airport in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. The initiative aims to enhance the experience for travelers as part of preparations for several upcoming national events, including the 2026 World Cup, the 2028 Olympics, and the United States’ 250th anniversary in July 2026.

The display features a life-sized spacesuit cutout that references the first moon landing and includes an honorary Customs Declaration form from astronauts provided by the National Air and Space Museum. Alongside it stands a six-foot fiberglass giant panda statue from the National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. These installations are placed in one of the busiest international airports in the country to improve the atmosphere for travelers waiting to be processed for entry or reentry into the United States.

Diane Sabatino, CBP Acting Executive Assistant Commissioner, said, “CBP is proud to help welcome travelers with symbols that reflect America's spirit of innovation and discovery. These displays—the panda statue and astronaut uniform—not only enhance the passenger experience at Dulles but also celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary by highlighting the Smithsonian's unmatched role in drawing visitors from across the globe."

According to CBP, while its primary focus remains on security functions such as counterterrorism and border protection, improving legitimate travelers' experiences is also a priority. The agency has collaborated with experts in wait-time design and public engagement to create a more welcoming environment at entry points by featuring content from organizations like the Smithsonian.

This installation is intended as the first of several similar displays planned for other major U.S. international airports and digital platforms. By combining resources from both CBP and the Smithsonian’s collections, officials hope these creative elements will foster pride in American heritage and innovation among both citizens and visitors.

CBP describes itself as America’s largest law enforcement organization with over 65,000 employees responsible for protecting U.S. borders on land, air, and sea. The agency states its mission includes ensuring lawful travel and trade while supporting national economic prosperity through collaboration and innovation.
