The Heritage Foundation has criticized the recent government shutdown, attributing it to the actions of Democrats in Congress. Richard Stern, director of the Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget at The Heritage Foundation, expressed disapproval over what he describes as Democrats prioritizing a "woke wish list" over essential government services.
"Instead of working to keep our government running, Democrats in Congress are playing a dangerous game, putting politics over people and holding the government hostage to force through their $1.5 trillion woke wish list," Stern said. He further accused Democratic leadership and their allies of being willing to halt government operations unless their demands are met. "It’s reckless, it’s partisan, and the American people deserve better," he added.
The shutdown occurred after federal funding expired at 11:59 p.m. on September 30. Earlier in September, the House of Representatives passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) intended to maintain government operations for an additional seven weeks. However, Democrats blocked this measure, seeking $1.5 trillion more in spending which includes restoring funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), and making permanent expansions to Obamacare subsidies and welfare for illegal aliens.
